How it works

EV cost per mile is kWh per 100 miles divided by 100, times your electricity rate. Gas cost per mile is the price per gallon divided by miles per gallon. Each is multiplied by your yearly miles, and the difference is your fuel savings. A negative savings number means the EV costs more to fuel at the prices you entered.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical EV efficiency?

Many electric cars use roughly 25 to 35 kWh per 100 miles. The EPA fuel economy label on the car lists its kWh per 100 miles, and that figure already includes charging losses.

Does this include public fast charging?

Only if you enter that price. Public DC fast charging often costs much more per kWh than charging at home, so if you rely on it, use a blended rate.

What is left out of this comparison?

Purchase price, insurance, maintenance, tax credits, home charger installation and resale value. This tool compares fuel cost only.
